TIMESCAPE
TIMESCAPE is a computer animation and soundscape revolving around deceptive contemplation. In this piece, we explore a place untouched by human perception, time having overflowed into a new era. In our limited lives, it is difficult to perceive time at scales unfamiliar to us. Today, we face an unprecedented vision of the future.
TIMESCAPE initially invites the viewer to enter a state of contemplation and appreciate the uncanny visual world that is offered before their eyes. Yet, tension rises in concert with the visual dynamics, and the contexture gradually becomes oppressive, almost aggressive - the simple state of contemplation becomes impossible. The music is never detached from the visuals, even if it sometimes tries to. It orbits around them, always reminded of their intrinsic relationship. It holds a responsibility for the narrative discourse and cannot escape this reality. Like music and visuals, can we, as humans, escape the responsibility of the future we’re building?
The music and animation were composed in a collaboration between Pablo Geeraert, the composer, and Victor Ivanov, the 3D producer. The project was created in parallel between the duo, similarly to their past collaborations, with both members proactively sharing progress on their respective medium and building a cohesive narrative through this ongoing back-and-forth conversation. The foundational 3D visuals were created using procedural generation, and a storyboard was formed to construct a visual narrative across the landscape and its various environments. Music was composed to reflect this environment in parallel, and in an active discourse between both artists, adjustments to both audio and visuals were progressively made to build up a cohesion between the two.
